Long ago (at least in the year 2015, during the summer) I was assuredly not a Donald Trump supporter. In fact, I was a detractor, a naysayer! Can you believe that? I’ve come around, but I cannot boast that I was “with Trump” from the beginning. Some of us take longer to see the light.
Anyway, I posted something in July, 2015, in which I likened Donald Trump to P.T. Barnum. I alluded to his supporters as “suckers.” Ironic…now I am one.
My analogy still stands, however.
I do believe Donald Trump is a masterful self-promoter and I especially believe he relishes the carnival atmosphere of this year’s Presidential election and the ensuing dust up. He thrives on the sideshow. The more chaotic, disordered and three-ring-circus the atmosphere and spectacle, the more giddy and energized he becomes. But this is exactly the personality and temperament required for a public official bent on inserting upheaval into a stagnate, frozen political system that has grown to thrive on apathy and consumerism and complacency.
If you want a Politician for the New Age to usher in change, he will need to be a bit on the hyperbolic and exaggerated side of the spectrum. A carnival barker.
As such, I don’t think he is beyond engaging in certain “dubious” practices perpetuated by his own hand if the ostensible aim is to inject his narrative through engaging bits of drama.
In fact, I sometimes wonder if the Jill Stein Show is his doing.
Jill Stein has remained stubbornly steadfast in her persistent mission to see voting recounts continued in 3 Rust Belt states that went to Trump. She has not openly supported Hillary Clinton (who would stand to gain if the recount revealed any sort of nefariousness); in fact, she had some rather harsh things to say about Clinton during the Presidential race. Stein’s motives are ambiguous and nonsensical and aimless. She claims that she is trying to examine the integrity of the American voting system through this tiresome exercise that dogs Trump’s victory like a mosquito. I call BS. Maybe I’m just a little cynical when it comes to politicians, even Green ones. The amount of money needed to initiate state recounts is enormous for a political hack of her means. Surely there are “other” routes for her to accomplish this electoral “exposure” besides expensive and pointless recounts.
But it is also revealed that the recounts are not quite exposing any revelations that would be beneficial to Hillary, and in fact, are doing just the opposite.
The great Philadelphia recount has ended, and Hillary Clinton got five more votes than she had in her previous total.
Donald Trump’s number stayed the same, as did the totals for Independent candidate Gary Johnson and the Green Party’s Jill Stein after the City Commissioners Office recounted votes in 75 of Philadelphia’s more than 1600 voting divisions. The recount had been launched by 250-plus Philadelphia residents answering the call of Stein, who asked for three petitioners in each of Pennsylvania’s voting district to file recounts to assist in her attempts to get a statewide recount through a Commonwealth Court and then Federal Court lawsuit.
Stein’s camp had planned on using the district-level recounts as possible evidence for hacking or fraud. The recount turned up no instances of fraud or hacking here, City Commissioner Al Schmidt said, emphasizing the difficulty of hacking voting machines that aren’t connected to the internet.
“We have very primitive voting machines here,” he said. “Our voting system is only vulnerable to individual cases of voting fraud, as we’ve seen. Whenever it does occur it would be someone going in and voting for somebody else or an election board manually adding votes, which is an entirely different thing than hacking.”
Could it be that Donald Trump is behind Jill Stein’s recount efforts in order to further demoralize the Hillary scourge?
Remember, Hillary did not pursue from the outset of her defeat on November 8. She was conspicuously reticent, in fact, considering her margin of loss. In fact, once the recounts were approved to commence independent of her staff’s contributions, she suddenly sent her lawyers in to “oversee” the operation. She didn’t anticipate the recounts and the greatest betrayer of broken plans (when you have something to hide) is betrayed by the act of getting your lawyers involved. Guilty consciences clearly signal.
Well played, Donald.
